Artist Statement
​
As a choreographer my work represents what I’m currently feeling, going through, or wanting more of in my life. I choreograph to music because it has this power to transport people to memories and feelings, which is what I want people to feel when seeing my dancing with the music. I gravitate towards movements that are seen as messy or uncontrolled, but in truth that are selected movements put together in a controlled manner. I love seeing a dancer or dancers fully immersed in my work as if it is their own. I try to cater to both the physical abilities of my dancers, but also to the physical wants of my own body in the moment of creation. Telling a story or establishing a story has always been my favorite thing about choreography. To be able to include the audience into the performance of watching the movement and listening to the lyrics or notes of the song. I am motivated by the collaborative process between the dancers and I, especially when I can see their excitement come through in their physicality. I challenge the dancer or dancers, but in a manner that enable them to become stronger as performers. I always encourage them to alter my choreography if needed to help them feel more authentic with their dancing body. Dance is an art form that holds so power over both the performers and audience, you can do so much with it.

Teaching Statement

Teaching allows me to cultivate my student's artistry and technique, but it is also a place for both my students and I to explore our compassion and humanity. When I teach, I want my students to be able to express themselves fully as artists and individuals. I care for each of my student's they are some of my most important people in life because of what I can learn from them. I am transparent with how I’m feeling, dance stories from my past, and encourage them to be transparent with me. I try to be welcoming, in that the dancers can have open conversation with me. I want to be able to cultivate dancers who understand the importance of dance and movement. How the lessons they learn in class can benefit their everyday life. I want them to know that they always have someone in their corner who is cheering and encouraging them to keep going even when life gets overwhelming. I want to be fully there for them as an instructor, mentor, and friend. As a student, I was told that class was a place to leave all your troubles at the door and for the hour or longer you are in class, all that matters is dancing. I try to implement this, but also encourage them to dance from those emotions (disappointment, exhaustion, happiness, excitement, etc.) they leave behind when it is called for. Most importantly, I want my dancers to have fun and to enjoy dancing.
